Oh! the places you’ll go ……Books on the wall?

Joanna Gains, HGTV’s Fixer Upper star, has photos of their new store Magnolia Farm at the Silo. Don’t you just love that show?  The old falling apart houses that Chip practically rebuilds and Joanna decorates into amazing homes.

There is no way I am interested in living in an older home; my husband is great but most days using a hammer is a request I forgo and do myself.  When we do a project together, he spends time studying, measuring, then purchasing the “right” tools before beginning.  You can bet a level is involved.  I only needed him to bang a nail in the wall because I couldn’t reach it!  So frustrating.

Back to Joanna and Chip; the photos include one simple wall with old books scattered across it. The aged book pages, the playful display about Fall has so much personality.  It is obvious to me, Joanna got this idea from Heather, my D-I-L,  When the family moved to Germany into a tall house with many empty spaces, Heather altered books and hung them on the wall.  It was so impressive.

As I’ve told many people, Heather introduced me to folding and altering books.  We share a love for books, creating and a last name.  Not to mention many laughs!

We attended her premier art show with RAW in Richmond early this month. RAW “showcases indie talent in visual art, film, fashion design, music, performance art, hair and makeup artistry, and photography. RAW is a fun and alternative way for artists to showcase both to their local community and the world-at-large. We are not your average art show. We are loud, colorful, creative, and all about our artists. We are RAW.  RAW currently operates in over 60 cities across the United States, Australia, Canada and the UK!”

The show was definitely all of these things and Heather has sold many of her book sculptures since then.  Her ETSY page , gallonidesigns will go dark soon as they will be moving.

Every bibliophile knows each book has a story; Heather’s sculptures incorporate her own story of books in a creative and original way.
